Welcome!
Founded in 1872, the Rockford Public Library has provided knowledge to the citizens of Rockford since before the invention of automobiles, light bulbs or telephones. In fact, when the Library first opened its doors the city had a total population of just over 11,000 people. Today, more than 130 years later, the Rockford Public Library has five branches and meets the information needs of 150,000 people in Rockford. Patrons check out more than one million items per year.
The Library's digital collection contains over 1,600 photographs and manuscripts from Rockford Public Library, Rockford College, Midway Village and Museum Center, Tinker Swiss Cottage and the Ethnic Heritage Museum. All of these institutions are located in Rockford, and by combining their collections they have created a powerful resource for understanding the history of Northern Illinois. Whether you are working on a school project or a local history buff, this collection makes sure that the rich history and traditions of Rockford are easily accessible and available.
